Friendship Couture: A Red Carpet Reunion

Introducing Ana, Molly, Gabi, Serena, Sarah, and Greta.This powerhouse squad met over two decades ago at Barnard College and forged a bond that defies distance and time. Their secret? A buzzing text chain and yearly reunions filled with laughter and shared adventures.

We were thrilled when Gabi and Ana reached out to us for help with their outfits for an Oscar night tradition of supporting their friend, Greta Gerwig. This is the third Vanity Fair Oscar night party that the group attended at Greta’s side, each time showing up in matching looks. This year, they opted for all small NYC-based, independent, women-owned and operated brands that they champion in their daily lives. The red carpet look included black dresses and sets by Mara Hoffman, metallic clutches by Tracey Tanner, jewelry by Odette, and for an added element of drama they each wore chartreuse patent shoes by Coclico.

SIX-WAY MEET-CUTE

There are six of us: Ana is an actress who starred in Barbie as Supreme Court Justice Barbie and recently starred in the Netflix series Painkiller. Molly is an oncology nurse in Portland, Oregon, where she is curing cancer. Gabi is Head of Operations for a luxury wellness brand in LA. Serena is a lawyer in New York who cannot reveal the high-profile lawsuits she has brought, but trust us... Sarah is a clinical social worker, practicing therapy with adolescents and young adults in New York City. Together with Greta, who directed the highest-grossing film ever made by a woman, we make a motley lil crew of lifelong friends.

We met in the halls of Barnard College for Women in New York over 20 years ago. We all came to relationships with one another individually, and then slowly started all living together, which eventually led to us living together for years after we graduated.

A STRONG AND COORDINATED BOND

A very active text chain is the secret to keeping a strong bond despite time and geography! Plus we all make an effort to be together or go on a trip together at least once a year.

Coordinating for an impact may have begun with Sarah’s wedding – we performed an elaborate dance in matching Dickies jumpsuits. From then on, matching outfits during major life moments kind of became what we do for each other. Serena didn't need official bridesmaids at her wedding, because we all showed up in bright orange. And frankly, it’s convenient to easily spot one another in a crowd.

In 2018 Greta invited us to join her at the Oscars and we surprised her by wearing matching outfits. This was so fun we did it again in 2020, and again in 2024. I suppose we’re all just getting started.

It felt very organic – there's a willingness to put one’s ego aside in favor of the group. Would each person make this fashion choice on their own? Probably not. Taken together, we’re a force and there's a momentum that takes hold. Everyone hates it (alone) until everyone loves it (together).

We’ve been all around the globe and to lots of special events, but nothing beats sitting on the floor and chatting all night.

We wanted to wear brands that we genuinely love and feel amazing in! Most of us choose woman-owned and operated independent brands in our everyday wear so it’s no surprise these outfits showcase that.

ANA ON WORKING WITH GRETA

We met acting in college doing a production of The Tempest and fell in friend love. She had me do a scene from Twelfth Night for Saorsie to play off of in Little Women. But this was our first on-screen professional collaboration. A fun game to play on set is to go around and have everyone say their “set crush.” It’s usually the happily married DP or the hot gaffer with the big hands. Mine was and is Greta.
